He relies heavily on metaphors to get his meaning across, and the song winds up with an overarching theme about finding a spiritual grounding within life, rather than hoping for salvation in death. The song runs over 8 minutes in length and features Plant’s signature vague, poetic songwriting style. Penned by Robert Plant, the lyrics to “Stairway to Heaven” that begins as a critique on an overly materialistic society, suggesting that spending your entire life collecting material possessions is a fruitless endeavor, as it won’t get you to heaven, and you can’t use any of it when you get there, anyway.

You’d be hard-pressed to find somebody who hasn’t heard this song, and everybody has their opinions on it as well as its meaning. Still, the song became a mainstay on rock radio and still reaches many, many people today. Surprisingly, “Stairway to Heaven” was never a hit on the charts, as it was never released as a single.

The track appeared on the band’s famous untitled album released in 1971, often referred to as Led Zeppelin IV (this is also the album where the Led Zeppelin symbols originated). Love it or hate it, Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” is one of the most popular rock songs of all time. Also if Rimmer did look back and gain influence from classic Greek art, I think the Apollo in this painting would have had some form of similarities to the original work.Īlso I can’t seem to find a comment from William Rimmer on this painting, I think its up to the viewer to decide.Led Zeppelin live in 1971. And in no work of art is Apollo portrayed with these characteristics. The statue is genderless, Hand is on forehead in agony, wings are spread, and the head is stretched back. This statue is one of a kind because it is the only public statue depicted of Lucifer. The statue in Parque del Buen Retiro (shows the fall of Satan into darkness) shares almost exact similarity to this painting. Angel’s greatest punishment is to be isolated from God, this causes great anguish, the figure in the painting is reaching for the sky in great pain as he falls into his enviable fate. Lucifer means “bringer of light” and the picture shows the bringer of light (the sun) descending into darkness. Also Apollo is never portrayed with wings, just as a young male figure. Lucifer on the other hand is an angel, and angels lack the ability to procreate because they are servants of the lord. The person depicted in this image lacks a gender, Apollo is distinctly male (even had a few male lovers). I don’t believe this painting to be Apollo.
